Este sábado 20 de mayo a las 11:00 horas en Santiago se realizará la Marcha Internacional contra Monsanto-Bayer. Les dejamos esta breve reseña por si aún no sabe porque existe tanta resistencia a esta transnacional y porque en más de 400 ciudades del mundo se marchará para evidenciar sus graves implicancias.
Monsanto es una compañía transnacional productora de agroquímicos y biotecnología para la homogeneización de la agricultura, comprada recientemente por la químico-farmacéutica Bayer. Actualmente la fusión de ambas empresas está siendo investigada por la Ley Antimonopolios de Estados Unidos, ya que juntas controlan el 70% de la superficie cultivada de algodón en ese país.
Desde su fundación en 1901 su historia ha estado marcada por hitos macabros, ya que además de la producción de herbicidas como el glifosato, bajo la marca Roundup, entre otros agroquímicos, fue el creador del Agente Naranja usado por los estadounidenses en la Guerra de Vietnam. Responsable de la muerte de 400.000 vietnamitas y medio millón de nacimientos de niños con malformaciones, además de la destrucción de miles de hectáreas de selva y cultivos para privar a los aldeanos de alimentos y de un lugar para esconderse.
Recientemente un juicio no vinculante realizado a Monsanto en un Tribunal de La Haya concluyó, luego de 6 meses de investigación, que la transnacional es culpable de ecocidio, daño a la salud humana y el medio ambiente, lo que fue respaldado por cientos de testimonios y antecedentes. Esto viene a corroborar las aprehensiones que existen contra la empresa en todos los rincones del planeta.
En noviembre de año pasado el programa italiano Le Iene publicó L’erbicida nuoce alla salute del mondo?, donde muestra como los herbicidas están matando a nuestros vecinos trasandinos. En proporción al número de habitantes, Argentina es el país que más glifosato utiliza y se viven los efectos irreversibles de este herbicida cancerígeno.
Uno de los lugares más críticos es San Salvador, de la provincia de Entre Ríos, conocido como “el pueblo del cáncer”, donde los casos más evidentes se dan en personas que trabajan con este tipo de sustancias sin tomar ningún tipo de resguardos, pero también afecta al resto de la población y se respira una polución permanente por el uso de agroquímicos en la agricultura.
En 2016 la localidad de Malvinas Argentinas, en la ciudad de Córdoba, logró impedir – tras tres años de movilizaciones y acampe- la construcción de una planta de Monsanto, la que iba a ser la empresa de tratamiento de semillas más grande de Latinoamérica.
Pero la transnacional no da pie atrás y se sospecha que el proyecto se trasladó a Chile, a raíz de la reciente aprobación por parte de la institucionalidad ambiental (Sistema de Evaluación Ambiental) para la expansión de la planta de Monsanto ubicada en la comuna de Paine, lo que mantiene en máxima alerta a organizaciones socio-ambientales y campesinas.
