Defendemos el derecho humano al agua y la protección de los glaciares

Ante la aprobación del proyecto de expansión de Los Bronces, de la minera multinacional AngloAmerican, Chile Mejor sin TLC se une al clamor y repudio de organizaciones socioambientales y personalidades, rechazando esta decisión.  Continuar con la destrucción de los glaciares,  principales  fuentes de abastecimiento de agua en la zona central que ya vive escasez hídrica,  es condenar a las regiones de Santiago y Valparaíso a ser zonas de sacrificio. Por ello, nos sumamos a la demanda de las organizaciones territoriales que exigen la salida de la ministra de medio ambiente, Maisa Rojas, por incumplimiento de sus compromisos internacionales en materia del cambio climático y por ignorar las demandas históricas de los territorios ya impactados por el accionar destructivo de Angloamerican en la cuenca del Mapocho y el Maipo.

Anglo American con sus operaciones de extracción de cobre en Los Bronces Integrado, ha generado la destrucción de los milenarios glaciares Olivares y Paloma, impactando reservas de las cuales depende el derecho humano al agua y la protección de los ecosistemas en tiempos críticos como los que vivimos, y contaminando cursos de agua.

Esta compañía minera opera también en Perú, Colombia, Brasil y el continente africano, con un historial de conflictos ambientales por su afectación de la vida de las personas y del medio ambiente.  Según el informe del Carbon Disclosure Project, Anglo American es una de las cien empresas responsables del 77% de las emisiones de carbono a nivel mundial y los ministros le han dado licencia para seguir calentando la tierra a cambio de medidas de compensación   para la risa, como entregar calefactores eléctricos para remplazar el consumo de leña en la región, obviando que los estudios muestran que la afectación a los glaciares proviene directamente de las faenas mineras.

Posibles demandas ante desastres ambientales

La sede de Angloamerican está en Londres, y el Reino Unido se unió recientemente al tratado TPP con el aplauso del gobierno de Boric. Por ello, alertamos que si más adelante, se logran políticas públicas que busquen poner freno a los desastres ambientales causados por AngloAmerican, Chile será llevado a tribunales internacionales como el CIADI donde suelen ganar las empresas. Allí las reglas las ponen multinacionales como Angloamerican, en defensa de la inversión que tanto alaba este gobierno, desentendiéndose de sus promesas y compromiso con la crisis climática y la salud. Los chilenos y chilenas pagaremos el costo de esas demandas por el Sistema Internacional de Resolución de Controversias (ISDS), además de las consecuencias ambientales y sociales derivadas de este proyecto.

Esta decisión política del gobierno reitera su capitulación ante las transnacionales, ya evidenciada con la aprobación del TPP y la firma del Acuerdo en Principio de Modernización del Tratado con la Unión Europea. Una vez más el gobierno desconoce su programa, y olvida que en sus tiempos de oposición parlamentaria generó la Bancada Glaciar y votó contra el TPP11.

Manifestamos nuestro apoyo a los recursos legales y movilizaciones que se lleven adelante para restablecer los derechos de las comunidades y de la naturaleza; para reponer el rechazo al proyecto emanado del Servicio de Evaluación Ambiental, y respetar el criterio de la Corte Suprema.  El alto tribunal en 2016 expresó en un pronunciamiento   que los glaciares son bienes nacionales, patrimonio ambiental de Chile y no pueden ser objeto de proyectos de inversión con fines económicos.
