Red de Acción en Plaguicidas de Chile, RAP-Chile, 18 de mayo de 2019
RAP-Chile viene por más de 20 años denunciando los daños causados por los plaguicidas fabricados por Monsanto. Hoy en especial los peligros los enfrenta la Comunidad de Paine gravemente afectada por la ampliación de la Planta Seleccionadora de Semillas, de la empresa Monsanto S.A.. A las cargas ambientales negativas, se suman efectos en la salud y en la búsqueda de nuestra soberanía alimentaria. Por tanto, como Red de Acción en Plaguicidas de Chile, llamamos a apoyar la marcha del domingo 19 de mayo contra Monsanto/Bayer y el TPP11, convocada por organizaciones de defensa de las semillas y las luchas socioambientales, y por Chile Mejor sin TLC, plataforma de la que participamos.
Monsanto por años ha contaminado a las personas, provocando muertes y graves enfermedades a trabajadores, trabajadoras, agricultores y personas expuestas a glifosato y otros plaguicidas fabricados por esta corporación transnacional agroquímica, y usados en cultivos convencionales y transgénicos. También ha contaminado el ambiente causando pérdida de biodiversidad y graves desequilibrios en los ecosistemas. No ha pagado los costos negativos económicos y sociales de los afectados y desde sus inicios ha liderado los esfuerzos de la industria química y agroindustria para restar importancia al daño provocado. Avalado por la autocomplacencia de los Gobiernos, ha afirmado, llevando a engaño, que los marcos regulatorios y la legislación vigentes ofrecen protección suficiente.
Ultimamente diferentes veredictos de la justicia internacional sobre los efectos de los plaguicidas de Monsanto/ Bayer han sido claros en reafirmar que el glifosato/ Roundup causa cáncer. La primera sentencia de la Justicia de California obligó a Monsanto/ Bayer a pagar cerca de 290 millones de dólares al jardinero, Dewayne Jhonson, quien contrajo cáncer terminal (linfoma no hodgkin) por estar expuesto al herbicida glifosato cotidianamente. Luego, en el caso Hardeman vs. Monsanto, un jurado de San Francisco, EE.UU, encontró al Roundup sustancial para provocar cáncer de linfoma no hodkin al demandante y en un tercer fallo reciente, otro jurado en California, Estados Unidos, determinó que Monsanto/ Bayer debe pagar US$2.000 millones a una pareja afectada de cáncer atribuido al Roundup. La empresa nunca ha advertido sobre los graves riesgos en la salud al exponerse a este peligroso herbicida. Este herbicida es el más utilizado en países de América Latina y en Chile. Fue categorizado como probable cancerígeno para humanos por la Organización Mundial de la Salud, además puede ocasionar daños a nivel de la expresión de los genes, alteraciones en el sistema nervioso, endocrino, reproductor, excretor (riñones) y mal de Parkinson.
Las actividades que ha desarrollado en Chile y en el mundo, fomentando el sufrimiento de las víctimas, constituyen una conducta delictiva de Monsanto que ha llegado límites inimaginables para negar impactos en la salud, establecer niveles de exposición permisibles que causan impactos en la salud de los trabajadores, o culpar a las víctimas por el uso indebido de sustancias tóxicas. Los plaguicidas y transgénicos que ha comercializado y distribuido ampliamente, han afectado gravemente los derechos a la vida, a la salud, a alimentos sanos y a vivir en un ambiente libre de contaminación.
