Por quinto año consecutivo nuestro país se une a la Marcha Mundial contra la transnacional de la bioingeniería Monsanto. Este año la marcha se realizará el próximo sábado 20 de mayo a las 11:00 horas la que partirá desde Plaza Los Héroes hasta Baquedano, con el objetivo de llamar la atención de autoridades y ciudadanía sobre los peligros para la salud humana y el medio ambiente del uso de semillas transgénicas y agrotóxicos a gran escala por parte de la empresa en todo el planeta.

En nuestro país, la actividad es organizada por el Colectivo Ecológico de Acción, perteneciente a «Chile Mejor sin TPP», una plataforma ciudadana de más de 100 organizaciones y movimientos socio ambientales que rechaza la ratificación del Acuerdo Transpacífico (TPP) y otros acuerdos de libre comercio con similares implicancias por parte del Estado de Chile.

Las marchas mundiales contra Monsanto han congregado durante los últimos años a más de 40 países y 400 ciudades en todo el mundo, siendo parte de diversas manifestaciones de organizaciones sociales, campesinas e indígenas para denunciar la política agresiva y expansionista de la transnacional estadounidense, poniendo en serio riesgo la autonomía alimentaria y los cultivos tradicionales.

Monsanto es reconocida por su fuerte lobby a nivel internacional para lograr que los distintos gobiernos aprueben leyes y tratados de libre comercio que favorezcan la ampliación de mercados para sus productos. Y si bien en Chile durante el primer gobierno de Bachelet fue ingresado un proyecto al Congreso que buscaba regular los derechos sobre obtentores vegetales (ley N° 19.342), conocida como la Ley Monsanto, ésta misma fue “bajada” en el segundo periodo, debido a las presiones sociales y campesinas que luchan por impedir la privatización de las semillas.

“La Ley Monsanto está archivada actualmente en el Ministerio de Agricultura, pero constituye un peligro latente, ya que podría activarse en cualquier momento debido a la presión de la agroindustria”, dice Patricia Núñez, vocera del Colectivo Ecológico de Acción, quien ha expuesto en las comisiones de ambas cámaras para dar a conocer el riesgo de la entrada en vigencia de una ley que concentra la propiedad de las semillas en empresas transnacionales.

La defensora de las semillas agrega que la principal amenaza hoy en día es la eventual reactivación del TPP, donde Chile está teniendo un rol activo en convocar a los otros miembros, ya que un tratado de estas características exige a nuestro país ratificar el Convenio UPOV 91, que es la versión internacional de la Ley Monsanto de privatización (propiedad intelectual) de la semilla.

Las experiencias de los países donde la Ley Monsanto ha entrado en vigencia, como es el caso de Colombia (Ley 970), ha sido nefasta, ya que a través del TLC con EEUU se impide a los campesinos almacenar semillas y permite solo la compra de semillas “certificadas”, debiendo ser eliminado lo que queda de la producción por prohibirse su uso. Esto ha afectado irreversiblemente la economía y sobrevivencia de los pequeños agricultores.

Por su parte, México decidió proteger su biodiversidad negando la entrada de productos transgénicos al país, pero se encontró con que era ilegal prohibir la importación del maíz transgénico proveniente de EEUU debido a la firma del  TLC con EEUU y Canadá, afectando al choclo tradicional contaminado por las esporas esparcidas por el viento.

Si bien Monsanto, recientemente comprada por la Alemana Bayer, no es la única transnacional dedicada a la reproducción y venta de productos agrotóxicos, si es la principal a nivel mundial y la reciente fusión de ambas empresas está siendo investigada por la Ley Antimonopolios de EEUU al controlar el conglomerado ahora el 70% de la superficie cultivada de algodón en ese país.

Por otra parte, Monsanto tiene hitos macabros en su historia desde su creación en 1901, ya que además de la producción de herbicidas (glifosato bajo la marca Roundup), entre otros agroquímicos, fue el creador del Agente Naranja usado por los estadounidenses en la Guerra de Vietnam, responsable de la muerte de 400.000 vietnamitas y medio millón de nacimientos de niños con malformaciones, además de la destrucción de miles de hectáreas de selva y cultivos para privar a los aldeanos de alimentos y de un lugar para esconderse.

Recientemente un juicio no vinculante realizado a Monsanto en un tribunal de la Haya concluyó, luego de 6 meses de investigación, que la transnacional es culpable de ECOCIDIO, daño a la salud humana y el medio ambiente, lo que fue respaldado por cientos de testimonios y antecedentes. Esto viene a corroborar las aprehensiones que existen contra la empresa en todos los rincones del planeta.

 El año 2016 la localidad de Malvinas Argentinas, en la ciudad de Córdova, logró impedir tras tres años de movilizaciones, la construcción de una planta de Monsanto, en lo que iba a ser la empresa de tratamiento de semillas más grande de Latinoamérica. Pero la transnacional no da pie atrás y se sospecha que el proyecto se trasladó a Chile, a raíz de la reciente aprobación por parte de la institucionalidad ambiental (Sistema de Evaluación Ambiental) para la expansión de la planta de Monsanto ubicada en la comuna de Paine, lo que mantiene en máxima alerta a organizaciones socio-ambientales y campesinas.

Lucía Sepúlveda, de la Red de Acción en Plaguicidas, RAP-AL Chile, e integrante de Chile Mejor sin TPP, considera que es importante asistir este sábado a la marcha contra Monsanto-Bayer porque en Chile estas transnacionales amenazan la salud de los pueblos.

Sepúlveda explica que, por un lado, están apunto de lograr la autorización para hacerse más fuertes en Paine con una nueva planta se semillas transgénicas e híbridas que reemplace la que no pudieron instalar en Argentina por la resistencia local en Malvinas, Córdoba. Y por otra parte, su exitoso logro con el gobierno de Bachelet y el ministro de Agricultura, Carlos Furche, en el proyecto de regulación de la apicultura que se aleja de sus objetivos originales de proteger las abejas y la biodiversidad.

“Las indicaciones sustitutivas puestas por el gobierno mantienen la situación actual en que las abejas se están muriendo y desapareciendo por el impacto de los plaguicidas neonicotenoides fabricados por Bayer y por los transgénicos de Monsanto. Hay que dar una señal fuerte de resistencia”, afirma.

Por todo lo anterior, chilenos y chilenas diremos una vez más este 20 de mayo: Fuera Monsanto de nuestros territorios”. ¡No los queremos, no los necesitamos!
