Glifosato ¿fin a la impunidad?

La justicia federal norteamericana acaba de sentenciar en California que el glifosato, (Roundup o Ranger Pro, sus nombres comerciales más conocidos), un herbicida promocionado y vendido como seguro por Monsanto desde 1974, opera como un plaguicida cancerígeno. En el fallo dictado por el jurado, la jueza Suzanne Ramos Bolano responsabiliza a esta corporación del cáncer terminal que padece el demandante, el afroamericano Dewayne Johnson (46 años, tres hijos pequeños). Al mismo tiempo, en Brasil, la jueza Luciana Raquel Tolentino de Moura suspendió toda venta y uso de glifosato, así como el registro de nuevos productos con ese principio activo, hasta que la Agencia Nacional de Vigilancia Sanitaria (Anvisa) concluya los procedimientos de reevaluación toxicológica del herbicida. Como resultado del fallo en California, según informa Bloomberg, las acciones de Bayer/Monsanto bajaron un 10, 4%, valores que son los peores registrados en los últimos dos años.
Expertos de todo el mundo consideran el glifosato un plaguicida altamente peligroso, alterador endocrino y genotóxico, que provoca daños a la salud humana y animal, y a la biodiversidad. La justicia está adoptando medidas que debieran ser tomadas por los gobiernos y agencias reguladoras, que luego de este fallo tendrán que pagar su deuda con la salud pública. El uso actual del glifosato incluye tanto la aplicación en cultivos transgénicos resistentes al mismo en grandes extensiones de campo, como su aplicación en cultivos convencionales de hortalizas, en plazas, parques, jardines y bordes de carreteras.
Monsanto deberá pagar 290 millones de dólares a Dewayne Johnson a quien los médicos dan pocos meses más de vida. El jurado del Tribunal Superior de San Francisco determinó que Monsanto, adquirido recientemente por la alemana Bayer, no advirtió correctamente del riesgo para la salud que se corría al usar este producto con glifosato. El jurado también concluyó que la omisión maliciosa de las advertencias necesarias contribuyó «sustancialmente» en la enfermedad de DeWayne Johnson, quien padece Linfoma no Hodgkin (un cáncer en los linfocitos de la sangre). Los alegatos comenzaron el 9 de julio y la jueza admitió testimonios de científicos que fundamentaron la relación causal entre el cáncer del demandante y su trabajo desde 2012 como aplicador del herbicida en los campos deportivos de las escuelas donde trabajó en Benice, California.
María Elena Rozas de RAP- Chile señala al respecto: “Celebramos el fallo de la justicia de California. Es una victoria histórica que sienta un precedente para poner fin a la impunidad y al ocultamiento de información por parte de Monsanto.”
Johnson declaró, «Pensé que, si podía matar malas hierbas, podría matarme a mí también…me lo tomé en serio. Por eso usé todo lo que pude para protegerme» y cuando accidentalmente no funcionó su protección, él llamó al fono de la industria que le aseguró no había peligro por ser rociado con el herbicida. El jardinero se convirtió en la primera persona en responsabilizar a Monsanto por el cáncer terminal que le afecta, y se estima que alrededor de 4000 casos similares esperaban en Estados Unidos el resultado de este juicio. Es la primera vez que Monsanto enfrenta en tribunales de Estados Unidos acusaciones que relacionan el uso del herbicida Roundup con efectos cancerígenos.
La defensa de Dewayne Johnson se basó en el informe de la Agencia Internacional de Investigación del Cáncer IARC (de la Organización Mundial de la Salud) que en 2015 reclasificó el glifosato como posible carcinógeno en seres humanos, pero también citó cifras del Instituto Nacional del Cáncer que señalan que a la mitad de los hombres norteamericanos se les diagnosticará cáncer en algún momento de su vida, en tanto que lo mismo le ocurrirá a un tercio de las mujeres estadounidenses. Además, se dieron a conocer documentos internos de Monsanto (“Monsanto Papers”), que la justicia ordenó desclasificar y en los cuales se comprobó que la empresa conocía desde hace décadas los efectos cancerígenos del glifosato y desarrolló una campaña para ocultarlos, lo que se intensificó tras el informe de la IARC. Las maniobras de Monsanto documentadas en esos correos electrónicos incluyen informes redactados por la empresa y firmados por científicos contratados para ello; también artículos de prensa y otros informes elaborados para desacreditar a la IARC y a todos los científicos que advirtieran de los peligros del glifosato.
Los gobiernos, principalmente con la información que les ha proporcionado Monsanto, clasifican al herbicida glifosato con etiqueta verde y lo muestran como la alternativa menos tóxica, con bajo impacto en los animales, los agricultores y consumidores. Sin embargo, ahora es cada vez más cuestionado debido a los resultados de investigaciones independientes que muestran efectos toxicológicos más profundos que los reconocidos en anteriores evaluaciones y al cúmulo de nuevas pruebas de sus efectos dañinos que surgen año a año en diferentes partes del mundo. La clasificación del glifosato como probable carcinógeno humano por la IARC, ratifica lo encontrado en vigilancias epidemiológicas e implica que cumple los criterios para ser catalogado como un Plaguicida Altamente Peligroso según la lista de Pesticide Action Network (PAN International 2016) y por la Reunión conjunta FAO / OMS sobre gestión de plaguicidas implementada por la FAO en Mozambique (Come et al 2013).
Los 41 nombres del glifosato
En Chile hay registradas 41 marcas comerciales de glifosato. La marca comercial Roundup está fabricada por Monsanto Argentina y Monsanto Chile y las demás marcas comerciales por diferentes empresas, entre ellas Anasac, Dow Agrosciences Argentina S.A., Zhejiang Xinan Chemical Industrial Group CO. Itd, Kingtai Chemicals CO. Ltd. / Rotam Agrochemical CO. Los consumidores están cada vez más expuestos a niveles más altos de residuos de glifosato, y de un número cada vez mayor de fuentes. Es así como se ha detectado que los residuos están muy difundidos en los alimentos, en particular los que contienen cereales o en el maíz transgénico o los productos derivados de la soja. En agua potable, en suelos, en miel de abejas,[ii]en el vino y la cerveza, e incluso en productos no alimentarios derivados del algodón transgénico.[iii]El alcance de la exposición humana se refleja en la presencia generalizada de glifosato en la orina humana[iv] y en la leche materna dondequiera que se haya analizado.
Además, estudios científicos independientes y envenenamientos ocurridos en el mundo[v] y en América Latina (resultado de la aplicación aérea) han comenzado a revelar numerosos efectos agudos y crónicos de los herbicidas a base de glifosato. Se han notificado graves intoxicaciones en América Latina como resultado de la fumigación aérea de cultivos de soja transgénica en Argentina y cultivos de coca en Colombia.
Los cultivos transgénicos o modificados genéticamente (OGM) permiten la aplicación post-emergencia en soja, maíz, algodón y canola debido a que son tolerantes al glifosato.
